Review of Furnish: Furniture and Design for the 21st Century

“Oh my. There are enough gasp-inducing moments of surprise here to make this a compulsive page-turner. Furnish offers more than just furniture, instead presenting environments that startle, occasionally shock and frequently evoke laughter. It’s design freed of earnestness, reinventing even the most basic meanings associated with forms and functions.” — John Bailey, The Sunday Age M magazine, May 18, 2008

Max Weiler 1910-2001

Matthias Boeckl
The cycle of paintings known as Four Walls marks a turning point in modern art history, bringing artistic analogies of natural creation into central focus. The uncommissioned works were created by Max Weiler between 1973 and 1977. Sized 2.56 x 6 meters, their dimensions can be compared to Monet’s Water Lilies exhibited in the Orangerie in Paris. Designed to be presented in a single room, they have rarely been on display simultaneously. The paintings were sold in the early ’80s; two of them were put on display in Vienna’s Law School, while the other two have been included in the collection of the Museum Moderner Kunst since 1992. This monograph reproduces the works as well as describing its genesis and context in art history at the turning point between historical modernism and contemporary art. Springer Verlag. ISBN 9783211490037. Hardback. $55.

Shift

Joseph Grima & Karen Wong
The new building for the New Museum of Contemporary Art, which will open in December 2007, will house the first museum to be developed from the ground up in Lower Manhattan. The seven-story building, with a total floor area of 60,000 square feet, designed by the renowned architectural duo SANAA - Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. This book presents the design and building of the new museum in a series of interwoven stories, documents, and dialogues. The building expands the museum and its distinct role within the city and at the same time testifies to an important moment in the history, art, and life of the city. The photographs by Dean Kaufman emphasize the dynamics of the life of the building, whose unpredictability and disorder seem to be in conflict with minimalist form and order. This richly illustrated book, edited by Joseph Grima, Director of the Storefront for Art and Architecture, and Lisa Phillips, Director of the New Museum, will provide insight into SANAA’s process. Lars Müller Publishers. ISBN 9783037781401. Paperback. $70.
